Sophomore Joey Medeiros is Saratoga’s No. 4 pitcher, but he looked like an ace on Tuesday. Medeiros pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout as Saratoga defeated Terra Nova 4-0 in a nonleague game at Terra Nova. “He’s thrown some quality innings for us,” Saratoga coach Adam Varteressian said. “He really stepped up today.”

Having that kind of depth is crucial for teams that harbor hopes of a postseason run. Varteressian believes his team belongs firmly in that category. http://www.sporthatshop.com/ “We can play with anybody when we’re at our best,” he said. Saratoga (11-6 overall) is 5-3 in SCVAL De Anza Division play, trailing Wilcox and Palo Alto and tied for third place with Homestead. The Falcons have seven of nine starters back from last year and have two future NCAA Division I players in catcher Stevie Berman (Santa Clara) and outfielder/pitcher Kyle Dozier (Loyola Marymount). “I wouldn’t say we’ve underachieved,” Varteressian said. “We just haven’t played our best yet. But we’re on the upswing now.” Terra Nova came into the game 10-1 against a not overly tough schedule.

“We’re starting to play better teams, trying to build a program,” Terra Nova coach Joey Gentile said. “We might’ve lost this game but it was a good competitive game to get us ready to go back into league.” Terra Nova, which is tied for second place with Burlingame at 3-1, one game behind Carlmont in the PAL Bay Division standings, has a Advertisement number of young players in key roles. Sophomores Ray Falk (4-0) and Anthony Gordon (2-0) are two of the team’s top pitchers. Gordon played shortstop and batted third Tuesday and belted a long double in the fourth inning. Julius Raval was the starting pitcher and he held Saratoga hitless through the first three innings. The Falcons broke through with three singles in the fourth inning and took a 1-0 lead. They scored two in the fifth when Derek Sun hit an RBI double to left-center and scored on a single by Thomas Alexander. Saratoga tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Trevor Hanks reached on an error, stole second and scored on a balk.

“They took advantage of their opportunities and we didn’t,” Gentile said. Alexander, Saratoga’s No. 1 starter, played second base Tuesday and had two hits with a run scored and RBI. Right fielder Davis Berryhill also had two hits, a single and a double. Both teams resume league play this week. Saratoga has a two-game series with Wilcox, at home Wednesday and at Wilcox on Friday. Terra Nova hosts Menlo-Atherton on Wednesday and plays at M-A on Friday.
